This years project is t o build a 1440 sq foot home for renowned Clay Artist Merry Cox and her husband Erik Hvoslef. The home will be incorporated onto a piece of land in Smeltertown that is already home to a variety of historic buildings that comprise of an old homestead. This home will incorporate traditional natural plasters inside and out. A rammed earth troumb wall, in-floor radiant heat and solar domestic hot water. We are truly looking forward to building this home for these hardworking conscientious individuals.
We will also be acting as consultants to a couple building a 2800 sq. foot home as well as providing some hands on assistance when required.
About all of our houses!!
The Strawbale Cottage is a hand built home using primarily recycled and local natural materials. Built with the utmost integrity!
The framing is primarily recycled salvaged lumber
The straw comes from the San Luis Valley, which helps support local agriculture, giving the walls an R30+ insulation value.
The ceiling Insulation is blown in cellulose with an R rating of 50 and is made of recycled newspaper
The metal roofing and soffat are chosen for its longevity and reusability
A block of wind-generated electricity is purchased to provide the energy to build the house.
The wood used in all the detailing is locally grown and sustain ably harvested and was either milled by us or purchased from a locally owned fourth generation saw mill just east of town.
The plasters are hand made and applied by us.
When you walk into a Strawbale cottage you wont smell the toxins, glues and chemicals that you get in other houses. Rather you get a natural smell. A smell of the country. Because thats what the house is built from!
