Mission Statement:
The Strawbale Cottage Workshops hopes to educate and empower folks interested in the process of working and building with Strawbale. We are committed to sharing and expanding the experience and techniques of the construction of Strawbale, natural building, as well as the promotion of its growing use. Our Intention is to build ecologically friendly, structurally sound, naturally efficient homes, using a minimum amount of embodied energy. Thus, resulting in a home that is comfortable, artistic and modern while striving to minimize the monthly and ever increasing utility bill. We hope to serve as a catalyst to foster the growth of creativity and innovation through sustainable, environmentally friendly means.

WORKSHOPS 2007
Because of the pressure that scheduling workshops puts on the actual building process we have decided to incorporate workshops into the building process.
Below is a schedule showing the time table for these phases of construction. Look at the schedule and if you see a phase of construction you are interested in you may sign up anytime, Monday-Friday to attend your own personalized workshop on your time schedule. Weekends may be scheduled with prior arrangements.
Cost: $75 per day with group discounts available with half down non-refundable deposit.
The donations will remain the same.
Come prepared to work ie: work gloves, work boots, proper clothing. Keep in mind this is Colorado at 7,000 plus feet. Bring layers and any tools that you find appropriate. You will be responsible for your own food and lodging. Bring your own lunch for lunch time is an excellent opportunity for open discussion.
Itinerary: All dates are subject to change.
Work starts at 9:00am. We will take the time necessary to orient you to the job site and what we did to get to this phase of construction. All discussions will be ongoing!
April 9-13, Concrete Floor Prep
Here you will have an opportunity to see what goes into a floor before the concrete is poured. Infloor radient heat, under-slab plumbing, insulation and additional mass will be some of the things covered. All this would apply to adobe floors as well.
May 1-18, Framing
The participant will learn the framing detail we use for a post and beam Strawbale infill structure including truss details as well as plumbing and electrical concerns.
June 11-15, Straw Stacking
This is all about stacking, filling, and cutting straw. You will see window and door buck installation as well as framing, plumbing, electrical and roofing considerations.
June 25-July 6, Strawbale Plaster Preparation
This will cover all the details that are involved with preparing the house for interior and exterior plaster. This will give you an opportunity to see all the phases of construction up to this point after which will be forever hidden.
July 9-20, Exterior Plaster
Earthen base coat, Lime top coat, rendering and application.
August 6-24, Interior Plaster
Interior Earthen / Adobe plaster base coat, finish coat and finishes, ie: Linseed oil, Alise, Coloring. Possibly tadelakt. Rendering and application.
Natural Home Tour: Stay Tuned
You may pick a day or days during the week of that phase of construction to attend. We will be taking the time out to explain in full detail any questions you may have. Exact periods are subject to change. Well stay in touch.
Construction Tours. Feel free to drop by the job site anytime for a tour and brief description of the building process. Cost is $10.
